Halet Efendi Tomb

Born Mehmed Said Efendi, Halet Efendi was a prominent figure in Ottoman diplomacy and state administration. He did not receive formal religious schooling (medrese) but educated himself independently.
During the reign of Mahmud II, he exerted considerable influence over grand viziers, playing a significant role in appointments and dismissals, eventually rising to the position of chief advisor.
He followed a conservative political path, opposing reform movements and European influence, and acted as a protector of the Janissary Corps. He was sent to Paris as an ambassador, where he closely observed the West but returned with negative impressions of France.
Due to the influence of his rival, Mehmed Said Galib Paşa, he was exiled to Konya by Mahmud II and was executed shortly thereafter. His severed head was initially buried in the Galata Mevlevi Lodge, then moved to Yahya Efendi Dergah due to rumors, and finally reburied in the Galata Mevlevi Lodge cemetery in 1841.
He was also a powerful orator and poet. His collected works (divan) and his book *Zinetü’l-Mecalis* are notable contributions.

Prominent Features:

The tomb is of the open-air type and built using limestone (küfeki) and marble.
It features nine round windows facing both the courtyard and the street.
Composite capitals, rounded arches, and triangular lozenge motifs decorate the façade.
The marble carvings display dynamic rosettes, leaf motifs, and oval medallions.
It has a double-winged iron door with ornate grilles.
The tomb is covered with a high, tiered vault resembling a dome; at the top stands a large stone Mevlevi headgear (sikke) set upon a pedestal.
In addition to Halet Efendi’s severed head, the tomb area also includes the graves of Kudretullah Dede, Ataullah Dede, Selanikli Ubeydullah Efendi (author of *Menâkıb-ı Mevlânâ*), and Emine Esma Hatun, wife of Şeyh Kudretullah Dede.
