Changes After Construction:
  • The building was constructed in 1875 in Kasımpaşa, then a naval district, as Bahriye Rüşdiyesi for educational purposes.
  • For 33 years, it served as the Ottoman Empire’s first and only Naval Secondary School. After 1908, it was transferred to the Ministry of Education of the period.
  • The structure has continuously hosted educational institutions and, in 1982, its exterior walls were preserved while the interior was rebuilt in reinforced concrete.
Prominent Features:
  • The building was also used for educational purposes under the names Kasımpaşa Merkez Rüşdiyesi and, after the proclamation of the Republic, Third Primary School.
  • Today, it is used as Kadı Mehmet Secondary School, named after the qadi of Mehmed the Conqueror.
  • The plot of the historic building was purchased in 1828 from the heirs of Grand Admiral Gazi Hasan Pasha.
