Aya Dimitri Sarmaşık Greek Orthodox Church
Changes After Construction:
- The building dated 1780 was reported to have been ruined in a fire; the present building dates to 1834.
- The bell tower made of iron rods belongs to a later period; its bell was cast in Istanbul in 1905.
Prominent Features:
- The church belongs to the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Istanbul.
- The building is also known as the Edirnekapı Ayios Dimitrios Church.
- The building is situated within a walled garden/courtyard.
- The church is a small-scale masonry structure; its narthex is wooden, and its upper covering is in the form of a tiled roof.
- In the interior, there is a “ship-style” ceiling composition; the central part of the ceiling is formed by a wooden vault resting on twelve wooden columns.
- The floor is paved with marble.
- The interior decoration generally displays a plain character; some icons on the wooden iconostasis are dated examples (for example, the Ayios Haralambos icon dated 1793 and the Young Ayios Pendeleimon icon dated 1935).
- Dated liturgical objects have also been recorded in the church, such as the large brass “mandallia” (sand chandelier) dated 1817.
