- Changes the building has undergone since its construction
It suffered great damage from disasters such as the fire of 1587, the earthquake of 1648, the fires of 1633-1634 and 1652. Its central dome and minaret collapsed.
It was repaired after the 1894 earthquake; it was repaired again in 1937-1938, 1956 and the 1980s.
In the 19th century, the end of the madrasah facing the street and some of its cells were demolished.
- Prominent features of the mosque
The main space, consisting of a narthex with a five-domed portico, a large main dome and a semi-dome, is enriched with rectangular projections and muqarnas pendentives towards the mihrab.
The body of the minaret with its balcony is decorated with stalactite projections. Its calligraphy was written by Sami Effendi during the 1896 restoration.
A caravanserai, a madrasah, a primary school, a shrine, a soup kitchen and a dervish lodge are also part of the complex, but most of them have been ruined over time.
There are graves of Ottoman statesmen in the cemetery. A Baroque style fountain built by Hekimoğlu Ali Pasha is adjacent to the mosque wall.
