Helvai Yakup Efendi, Silifke’nin Zeyniye köyünde doğmuş, İstanbul’a gelip Pir Ali Aksarayi’den ders alarak Bayrami Tarikatı’nın Melami koluna intisap etmiştir.
About the Tomb:
Construction Year: 16th century
Ordered by: Unknown
Architects: Unknown
Prominent Features:
The original tomb was built in the 16th century; however, the structure that survives today dates to the last quarter of the 19th century. After excavations and reconstruction by İBB Miras in 2022, it was faithfully rebuilt and opened to visitors in 2024.
The tekke and tomb complex includes sections such as the prayer hall (tevhidhane), tomb, private quarters (harem), men’s quarters (selamlık), and kitchen.
Helvacı Baba is known for the tale of the “never-ending cauldron”; the tradition of distributing semolina halva after Friday prayers continued for centuries.
This charitable halva tradition, which lasted until the 1980s, is now maintained symbolically.
Thanks to the archaeological excavations by İBB Miras, the structures were rebuilt true to their original form based on uncovered foundation traces.
