He became the first Minister of Finance of the Ottoman Empire with the title of “Minister for Financial Works” in the new financial organization established by merging the Imperial Treasury and the State Treasury with the decree issued on 28 February 1838 during the reign of Mahmud II.

Abdurrahman Nafiz Paşa, who served as governor in various Ottoman provinces in the 19th century, was one of the important statesmen of the period. He died in 1853.

Featured Highlights

  • The tomb measures 5.00 x 5.00 meters and is an open tomb in the Empire style.

  • It was built from cut limestone.

  • The tomb is surrounded by twelve square-section marble columns with Tuscan capitals. These columns are in groups of three or four on the north, west and south facades.

  • There are marble lintels on the columns, and the spaces between them are covered with bronze networks decorated with stylized leaves.

  • The upper cover is provided by a wire mesh in the form of a boat-vault with a metal skeleton.

  • Inside there is a marble sarcophagus belonging to Abdurrahman Nafiz Paşa.

  • The tomb was also built together with a library and forms part of the Yenikapı Mevlevi Lodge.
