Person in the Tomb

Ahmed Buhari was an important Naqshbandi sheikh who arrived in Istanbul from Bukhara and passed away around seventy years after Emir Ahmed Buhari. He spent most of his life in the Unkapanı area and died there in 1586.

Sultan Murad III held great respect for Ahmed Buhari and had a tomb built over his grave after his death. A tekke bearing his name was also established.

The tomb was later lost, and houses were built over its location. According to tradition, the last sheikh of the tekke, Ali Fakri Efendi, told Sultan Mahmud II that Ahmed Buhari had appeared to him in a dream asking to be rescued from his condition. Sultan Mahmud then ordered Naqshbandi sheikh Mustafa Mısri Efendi to locate the grave. Upon Mustafa Mısri Efendi’s spiritual discovery of the tomb, the sultan ordered the demolition of the surrounding houses and had the tomb and tekke rebuilt.
