Changes After Construction:
The building, originally constructed in 1876 as a girls’ school under the name Numune-i Şükran Mektebi, was rebuilt in 1936 as Cibali 40th Primary School.
Prominent Features:
The educational institution, known in the early Republican period as the 11th School, currently operates as Akşemsettin Imam Hatip Secondary School.
The Numune-i Şükran Schools, which played an important role in women’s education, were part of the steps taken toward the modernization of education in the late Ottoman period.
The school campus is depicted as a large area in maps prepared by topographer Jacques Pervititch between 1922 and 1945.
Among the school’s alumni are the renowned writer Samiha Ayverdi and the artist Müfide Kadri.
