About the Person:
  • Avcıbaşı Mehmed Bey served as the officer responsible for the hunting organization of the Ottoman army during the reign of Mehmed the Conqueror and participated in the conquest of Istanbul in 1453 and was one of the “Nime’l-Ceyş”, that is, literally “the happy soldiers” whose conquest was heralded.
  • He gave his name to the district together with the mosque and graveyard belonging to him. According to the narrations, he was buried near one of the companions of Prophet Muhammad, Shuba.
  • His grave was repaired and an inscription was placed on it by the Istanbul Conquest Society in 1953, on the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the conquest.

  • It was built in the style of an open tomb.
  • Inside the tomb, there are tombstones from different periods, including a tomb from the end of the 18th century.
  • One of the inscriptions bears the date 1781-82 and is dedicated to a person named Gül Ahmed who died at a young age.
  • The tomb is located in the cemetery just across from the Avcıbey Mehmet Bey Mosque and has an important place in the historical memory of the district.
  • Its proximity to the tombs of the Prophet’s Companions has made it accepted as a place to visit among the public.
