Aya Profiti İlias Greek Orthodox Church
Changes After Construction:
- It is known that a monastery dating to the 10th century existed on the site where the present church stands.
- The present church was built in 1804 and was repaired in 1831.
- The holy spring in its courtyard, dedicated to the Prophet Elijah, was repaired in 1945.
- The windows of the priest’s residence on the courtyard retaining wall were bricked up, and the space was abandoned.
Prominent Features:
- The church belongs to the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Istanbul.
- The church, dedicated to the Prophet Elijah, is the second-largest Greek Orthodox church in Istanbul.
- The building has a three-aisled basilica plan.
The church contains the Panagia Sumela icon, which was made in the Sumela Monastery in 1815.
