Changes After Construction
It was first designed as a pagan temple during the reign of Emperor Constantine and, with the acceptance of Christianity, was built as a church dedicated to the Archangel Michael under the name “Pammegiston Taxiarchon.”
It was damaged and destroyed during the Conquest of Istanbul.
The church building was renovated in 1820.
In 1872, a school building for Greek students was constructed within the church complex.

Icons taken from a Byzantine ship, including a double-sided icon of the Archangel, are displayed in the church.
A holy spring is located within the church complex.
According to legend, the tradition of the Archangel Michael sanctuary (Michaelion) at Sosthenion in İstinye is associated with this church.
