Aya Yorgi Greek Orthodox Church
Changes After Construction:
- In 1751, a two-story, tile-covered small church–chapel–prayer space arrangement was established.
- In 1905, a new church of cut stone was built.
- In 1909, the new church was opened for use.
Prominent Features:
- The church belongs to the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Istanbul.
- The monastery is located on the highest hill of Büyükada (Yücetepe).
- The structure is dedicated to Saint Georgios and takes its name from this saint.
- In municipal and official cultural content, there is an origin account of the monastery extending back to the year 963.
- In a golden-sealed decree dated 1158, the name “Kodono” is stated to be among the monasteries on the islands.
- In the interpretation of historical sources, the name “Aya Yorgi Kudunas” has been associated with the same monastery.
