Changes After Construction:
In 1751, a two-story, tile-covered small church–chapel–prayer space arrangement was established.
In 1905, a new church of cut stone was built.
In 1909, the new church was opened for use.
Prominent Features:
The church belongs to the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Istanbul.
The monastery is located on the highest hill of Büyükada (Yücetepe).
The structure is dedicated to Saint Georgios and takes its name from this saint.
In municipal and official cultural content, there is an origin account of the monastery extending back to the year 963.
In a golden-sealed decree dated 1158, the name “Kodono” is stated to be among the monasteries on the islands.
In the interpretation of historical sources, the name “Aya Yorgi Kudunas” has been associated with the same monastery.
