Abdurrahim Molla
Profile summary

Highlights
Abdürrahim Molla, whose date of birth has not been identified, was the son of Uncuzâde Abdülhalim Efendi, one of the judges. In the Ottoman learned establishment, judges were not only officials who delivered legal judgments, but also madrasa-trained state servants who played an important role in the legal, administrative and social functioning of towns and districts.
The title “Molla” in Abdürrahim Molla’s name shows that he too was remembered within the learned circles. In Ottoman usage, the word molla was used both as a scholarly title and as a term associated with high-ranking judgeships. In this respect, although his personal offices cannot be identified in detail, Abdürrahim Molla should be regarded as a member of the Uncuzâde family connected with the judicial and learned circles.
His gravestone especially states that his father Abdülhalim Efendi was among the “kudât-ı kirâm,” or honoured judges. Abdürrahim Molla’s identity is therefore remembered largely through his father’s learned profession and family prestige. Abdürrahim Molla died on 20 Dhu al-Hijja 1242, corresponding to 15 July 1827, and was buried in the Fatih Mosque Cemetery.
