Epitaph

He is the Eternal. This person, son of Hurufi Edhem Efendi from one of the well-known families of Ergiri in the province of Ioannina, has become mortal no more. He was a person of great worth and among the first-rank state officials. He was the most elegant man in the assemblies he attended. He served for a time as district governor in the province of Hijaz. His peerlessness became proverbial. May he be given glad tidings of mercy through Allah’s grace, for he constantly remembered the Prophet with unending love. Let those who come to visit him offer a Fatiha. Alas a thousand times! This stone became the sign of his death. With five men I spoke a jeweled chronogram for his passing: "Fehim Bey at this moment easily went to the place he desired, Paradise." A Fatiha for his soul and for the souls of all believers. 12 June 1890.
