Ali Bey
Profile summary

Highlights
Gümüşçü Ali Bey, whose date of birth has not been identified, was one of the silversmiths and merchants belonging to the bedesten circle of the Grand Bazaar. The title “Bedestânî” shows that he was known among the tradesmen of the bedesten, one of the oldest and most respected centres of Istanbul commercial life.
Bedestens were covered market structures in Ottoman cities where valuable textiles, jewels, silver, gold and precious goods were bought and sold, and also stored securely. In Istanbul, the Cevahir Bedesteni and Sandal Bedesteni, forming the core of the Grand Bazaar, were for centuries among the centres of valuable goods and jewellery trade.
Gümüşçü Ali Bey’s name is remembered in the memory of the Grand Bazaar and Sandal Bedesteni among bedesten merchants who acquired great wealth and fame. A newspaper article from 1961 referred to him as “Gümüşçü Ali Bey, who became a millionaire several times over.”
The first four lines of Gümüşçü Ali Bey’s gravestone were erased for unknown reasons, and details of his family and life have not been identified. He died in 1328 in the Hijri calendar, corresponding to 1910, and was buried in the Fatih Mosque Cemetery.
