Hacı Hasan Efendi, whose date of birth is unknown, appears in sources as Hasan Sabri b. Mustafa. Also known as “Altunizâde” and “Sultan Selim Hatibi,” Hasan Efendi served as imam at Debbağ Yunus Mosque and as preacher at Sultan Selim Mosque.
Hacı Hasan Efendi studied the science of Qur’anic recitation with the famous scholar Yemişçizâde İsmail Hakkı Efendi and was described as “the sheikh of the sheikhs of recitation” and “the teacher of all.” These phrases were traditional titles used for the most senior and respected figures among teachers of Qur’anic recitation.
Many students, including Süleyman Sürûrî Efendi and Serezli Ahmed Şükrü Efendi, studied Qur’anic recitation with him.
Hacı Hasan Efendi died on 29 Sha‘ban 1338 (18 May 1920) and was buried in the Fatih Mosque Cemetery.
