Hacı Mahmud Sabri Efendi

Hacı Mahmud Sabri Efendi, whose date of birth is unknown, was born in Hemşin, Rize. His inscription describes him as one of the worthy scholars and valuable masters who had gathered both outward and inward knowledge in himself.

Mahmud Sabri Efendi was one of the dersiâms of Süleymaniye Mosque, and his name also appears among the scholars who attended the Huzur Dersleri held before the sultan. Sources state that between 1296 and 1313 (1878-1895), he participated in the Huzur Dersleri as a muhatap.

The Huzur Dersleri were Qur’anic commentary lessons held before the sultan during Ramadan. In these sessions, scholars called mukarrirs delivered the lesson, while muhataps participated in the scholarly discussion.

Hacı Mahmud Sabri Efendi died on 14 Rabi al-Akhir 1313 (8 October 1895) and was buried in the Fatih Mosque Cemetery.
