Highlights

  • Born in Amasya in 1233, Mehmed Nureddin Efendi belonged, according to his inscription, to a sayyid family connected to the Prophet’s lineage through Abdülgani-i Horasânî.

  • For a time he served as imam to Atiyye Sultan, daughter of Sultan Mahmud II, and was therefore known as “Atiyye Sultan İmamı.”

  • From 1265 to 1299, Nureddin Efendi served as district governor of the Fatih Vakıf Odası; he also held niyabet posts in Maraş, Tripoli, Çorum, Tokat, Amasya, Erdek, Bandırma, Mahmud Paşa, Davud Paşa and Galata. Niyabet refers to a religious-judicial duty carried out on behalf of a judge or as deputy judge.

  • In 1299, he was granted the İzmir pâye. In the Ottoman ilmiye establishment, a pâye often signified the rank and prestige corresponding to an office rather than the actual performance of that office.

  • Hacı Nureddin Efendi died on Friday, 6 Ramadan 1318 (28 December 1900), and was buried in the Fatih Mosque Cemetery.

Epitaph

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. In the path, Hacı Nureddin Efendi’s support was undoubtedly Hazrat Abdülgani, from whose pure line he descended. If he held judicial office and other duties, in those tasks too he clung to the rope of the sacred law of Hazrat Ahmed, the Prophet. He was a servant of the sacred law and a traveller on the path of Allah. Until the end of his life, his aim was the Truth. These were his merits in both worlds. The bird of his soul flew away and found its eternal nest. Two dervishes came forth and, in a manner befitting dervishes, pronounced the date of his death: "Nureddin Efendi has passed away; may his grave be filled with light." Birth: 1817. Death: Friday, 28 December 1900.

A Fatiha for his/her soul
