Highlights

  • Hâfız İbrahim Bey, whose date of birth has not been identified, was one of the late Ottoman physicians who came to the fore both through municipal medicine and national aid initiatives. As physician of the Second Municipal District, he served within Istanbul’s municipal health services and was known as a skilled doctor.

  • His most lasting role was in the founding of the Ottoman Navy National Aid Society. On 10 July 1909, Dr. Hâfız İbrahim, Dr. İsmail Hakkı, Dr. Petraki Papadopulo and municipal chief engineer Haşim Bey, all connected with the municipal health branch in Istanbul, came together and proposed strengthening the Ottoman navy through regular public donations. This meeting became the beginning of a large aid movement that soon spread throughout the country.

  • The Navy Society became one of the most influential examples of the new associational life that emerged after the Second Constitutional Period. It quickly moved beyond Istanbul, opened branches in Anatolia and awakened a strong idea of naval patriotism in Ottoman public opinion.

  • Hâfız İbrahim Bey died in 1326 in the Rumi calendar, corresponding to 1908, and was buried in the Fatih Mosque Cemetery.
