Hasan Baba
Profile summary

Highlights
Hasan Baba, whose date of birth is unknown, was born in Bayburt.
On his gravestone he is remembered as “Mazanne-i ricâl-i mesâkin.” This expression, meaning “one of those known as protectors of the poor and forlorn,” is a sign of Hasan Baba’s dervish identity.
Bayburt, his birthplace, has a strong spiritual environment in Ottoman and Republican folk Sufism, associated with dervishes and minstrels bearing the title “baba.” Bayburtlu İrşâdî Baba, who lived in the 19th century, is among the known figures of this circle. Although Hasan Baba’s direct connection with these lineages could not be established, his nisba allows him to be read within the same regional dervish culture.
Bayburdlu Hasan Baba died on 3 Rabi al-Akhir 1322 (17 June 1904) and was buried in the Fatih Mosque Cemetery.
