Highlights

  • Hasan Tahsin Efendi, whose date of birth is unknown, is remembered with the nisba “Karaferyeli” and as the son of Hafız Ahmed Efendi. Karaferye is the city of Veria, now within the borders of Greece, and in the Ottoman period it was one of the important Rumelian districts west of Salonica.

  • Hasan Tahsin Efendi, who held the Istanbul pâye, was described as one of the “mütebahhirin-i ulema,” that is, scholars deeply versed in various branches of knowledge. In the Ottoman ilmiye establishment, a pâye was a degree given as rank and title rather than necessarily as an office actively held.

  • Hasan Tahsin Efendi later served as a member of the Mahkeme-i Temyiz, taking his place within the higher judiciary of the Ottoman legal system shaped after the Tanzimat. The Mahkeme-i Temyiz, known by this name from 1879 onward, was the high court that later became the Court of Cassation in the Republican period.

  • Hasan Tahsin Efendi died on Wednesday, 13 Jumada al-Akhir 1309 (14 January 1892), and was buried in the Fatih Mosque Cemetery.
