Highlights

  • Born into a family originally from Karaman that later settled in Istanbul, Hâce Hürmüz Hanım was the wife of Mehmed Efendi. Her husband was martyred at Plevna during the Ottoman-Russian War of 1877-1878.

  • Her family later continued in the Ottoman military and administrative circles through her sons. One of them, Hasan Muhiddin Çanga Paşa, was born in Istanbul in 1866 and received his education at Fatih Military Middle School, Kuleli Military High School and the Military Academy. He served for many years in the Hijaz and Yemen, and his reports on the 1904 Sana‘a events are among the notable examples of late Ottoman military observation in Yemen.

  • Hasan Muhiddin Çanga Paşa later rose to the rank of mirliva and served in Yemen, Iraq-Mosul, Gilan and the Balkans. Another son of Hürmüz Hanım, Hacı Hayri Bey, served as a clerk in the Accounting Office of the Şehremaneti, the Istanbul municipality.

  • Hâce Hürmüz Hanım died on 12 April 1320 in the Rumi calendar, corresponding to 7 Safar 1322 in the Hijri calendar and 25 April 1904 in the Gregorian calendar. She was buried in the Fatih Mosque Cemetery.

He is the Eternal. For the sake of Allah, a Fatiha for the soul of Hoca Hürmüz Hanım, wife of the deceased Mehmed Efendi and mother of His Excellency Mirliva Hacı Muhyiddin Paşa and Hacı Hayri Bey, one of the clerks in the Municipal Accounting Administration. 25 April 1904.
