Highlights

  • Hüseyin Ağa, whose date of birth has not been identified, was one of the judicial officials who served within the Bâb-ı Fetvâ-penâhî, that is, the office of the Şeyhülislam. His seyyid nisba shows that his family preserved its claim to descent from the Prophet.

  • The Kısmet-i Askeriyye where Hüseyin Ağa served was the court in the Ottoman judicial organization where the estates of those belonging to the askerî class were divided. Here the term “askerî” did not refer only to members of the army, but to the privileged class that also included the learned, scribal and administrative circles in state service.

  • Muhzırs were court officers who brought before the court those who had to be summoned and assisted the judge in court order and procedures. The muhzırbaşı was the head of these officers. Hüseyin Ağa held this position in the Kısmet-i Askeriyye Court and served within the sharia-judicial circle where inheritance and estate procedures were carried out.

  • He died on 14 Muharram 1295, corresponding to 18 January 1878, and was buried in the Fatih Mosque Cemetery.
