İbrahim Burhaneddin Efendi
Profile summary

Highlights
İbrahim Burhaneddin Efendi, born in Beypazarı in 1240 in the Hijri calendar (1824), was one of the scholars who served for many years in the late Ottoman ilmiye and judicial organization.
After receiving three separate ijazahs in religious and rational sciences, he entered the ilmiye path as a drafting clerk at the Fetvahâne. The Fetvahâne was the unit within the Meşihat where fatwa procedures were carried out; müsevvids were chancery officials who prepared fatwas and religious-legal documents.
In later years, İbrahim Burhaneddin Efendi served in directorates connected with the sharia courts and in the Mekteb-i Nüvvâb, the professional law school established to train judges and deputy judges.
During a service life exceeding half a century, he served as nāib, or deputy judge, in various sanjak and provincial centers, and died while serving as the central religious deputy judge of Kastamonu province.
He held the Haremeyn-i Muhteremeyn pâye. In the Ottoman ilmiye establishment, a pâye was a title granted as a degree of rank and prestige rather than as an active office. The Haremeyn pâye was given to scholars who held a high degree in the ilmiye hierarchy.
İbrahim Burhaneddin Efendi, remembered for his scholarly competence, asceticism and piety, died on Thursday night, 12 Dhu al-Hijja 1317 (12 April 1900), and was buried in the Fatih Mosque Cemetery.
