Kasım Tevfiki Efendi

Kasım Tevfikî Efendi, whose date of birth has not been identified, was one of the notables of Ergiri in the province of Ioannina.

Kasım Tevfikî Efendi was known in Ottoman judicial and learned circles for his service as a deputy judge. A nâib was a deputy judge who served in court on behalf of the judge; the phrase “kudemâ-yı nüvvâb” places him among the old and experienced members of this profession.

One of Kasım Tevfikî Efendi’s nâib posts can be traced in İnegöl. A study of the İnegöl sharia court registers shows that Kasım Tevfikî Efendi served as nâib of İnegöl from 16 February 1889, and that after 26 January 1891 this office passed to İsmail Âşir Efendi.

Kasım Tevfikî Efendi died on 10 Kânunuevvel 1323, corresponding to 23 December 1907, and was buried in the Fatih Mosque Cemetery.
