Mahmud Hilmi Efendi
Profile summary

Highlights
Mahmud Hilmi Efendi, whose date of birth has not been identified, was a late Ottoman scholar of Tırnova origin. He pursued his scholarly career in Istanbul, around Fatih Mosque, and became known there as a müciz dersiâm. This title was used for teachers authorized to give lessons at a level that allowed them to grant ijazahs to their students.
Because Fatih Mosque was one of the most important centres of Ottoman madrasa life, being a dersiâm there meant not merely giving lessons in a mosque, but holding a respected teaching position within the learned circles of Istanbul. Mahmud Hilmi Efendi’s being described as “müciz” indicates that he was one of the teachers who granted scholarly competence to students trained in his lesson circle.
Mahmud Hilmi Efendi also served as a member of the Meclis-i Mesâlih-i Talebe. This council dealt with the lessons, examinations, registration and other educational affairs of madrasa students. He thus stands out both as a teacher who taught at Fatih and as a member of the learned establishment who took part in the administrative affairs of madrasa students.
He died on 12 Ramadan 1333, corresponding to 25 July 1915, and was buried in the Fatih Mosque Cemetery.
