Mahmud Lâmi Efendi, whose date of birth could not be determined, was the son of Hacı Abdüsselam Efendi, Mufti of Kilis, a member of the ilmiye who taught hadith and Islamic law in the madrasa circle.
Mahmud Lâmi Efendi served as muallim-i evvel, or head teacher, at the Birecik Rüşdiye School. After twenty years of service at this school, he was appointed to Istanbul in 1892; shortly afterwards, he was appointed a member of the Meclis-i Kebîr-i Maârif, the Grand Council of Education, within the central organization of the Ministry of Education.
The Meclis-i Kebîr-i Maârif was one of the central councils in the Ottoman educational organization where decisions and regulations concerning educational affairs were discussed.
Mahmud Lâmi Efendi died on 1 Jumada al-Akhir 1315 (28 October 1897) and was buried in the Fatih Mosque Cemetery.
