  • He went to the Hijaz while on leave from his post as Ankara mektupçu and performed the pilgrimage. On his return he was appointed governor of Hakkâri sanjak, but died before he could begin this new office.

  • Mahmud Tal‘at Bey died on Sunday, 6 Ramadan 1317 (7 January 1900), at the age of 64, and was buried in the Fatih Mosque Cemetery.

Epitaph

He is the Eternal. This is the grave of Mahmud Talat Beyefendi, son of Hasan Paşa, respected uncle of the late Mehmed Akif Paşa, one of the virtuous viziers of the Ottoman State, who is buried near Fatih. The named person went on pilgrimage while on leave from his post as mektupçu of Ankara and, on his return, was appointed governor of Hakkari Sanjak. After returning from there, he died, leaving his children and loved ones in sorrow.

The lights of his character were reflected on his pure face; he was a noble person worthy of being called an example of virtue and intelligence. May Allah’s mercy be upon him. Monday, 8 January 1900. Age 44.
