Mehmed Said Efendi

Mehmed Said Efendi, whose date of birth has not been identified, was one of the early members of the Uncuzâde family, which can be traced through several graves in the Fatih Cemetery. While other records of the family show learned figures connected with the judgeships of Mecca, Galata and Bursa, the record of Mehmed Said Efendi carries this line back to an earlier date, the first half of the eighteenth century.

Mehmed Said Efendi is remembered as the grandson of a family elder who founded a madrasa. This expression shows that the Uncuzâdes were connected not only with judgeships and learned offices, but also with the madrasa environment and the tradition of waqf and charitable foundations. However, the identity of the family elder who founded this madrasa cannot be established with the existing information.

The year 1740, when Mehmed Said Efendi died, is earlier than the period after 1780, when the Fatih Mosque Cemetery is generally accepted to have begun taking shape in its present sense. For this reason, the gravestone belonging to Mehmed Said Efendi should be considered one of the early Uncuzâde records transferred into the present cemetery arrangement.

Mehmed Said Efendi died in 1153 in the Hijri calendar, corresponding to 1740. His grave is today located in the Fatih Mosque Cemetery.
