Highlights

  • Mustafa Nuri Bey, whose date of birth could not be determined, belonged to the Şirvânîzâde family.

  • In the 19th century, the family produced figures known in both Sufi circles and Ottoman state service. Among the children of İsmail Sirâceddîn Şirvânî, the Naqshbandi-Khalidi sheikh buried in Amasya, were Şirvânîzâde Mehmed Rüşdü Paşa, who rose to the grand vizierate, Ahmed Hulûsi Efendi, one of the judges of Istanbul, and Mustafa Nuri Bey, who is recorded as having died in Istanbul.

  • Mustafa Nuri Bey served as accountant at the Ministry of Commerce and Public Works.

  • The phrase “one of the men of rütbe-i bâlâ” on his gravestone indicates that he held a high rank in the Ottoman civil bureaucracy. Rütbe-i bâlâ was one of the high degrees granted to senior state officials in the 19th-century Ottoman administrative hierarchy.

  • Şirvânîzâde Mustafa Nuri Bey died on 18 Shawwal 1316 (1 March 1899) and was buried in the Fatih Mosque Cemetery.

Epitaph

He is the Living, the Eternal. Look how cruel fate committed such oppression and injustice. It destroyed this body filled with mercy. He was a deeply patriotic and public-spirited man. He rendered very serious services to the state. May he always be granted Your forgiveness, O Lord, for now he has made the underground his dwelling. With a sigh I pronounced the date of death, but Reşid said: "He plunged everyone, head to foot, into grief." Alas, Mustafa Bey departed to the hereafter in the very year he became a first-rank state official. 1 March 1899.
