Highlights
Mahmud Cemaleddin Efendi was born in Ünye in 1875 and became known as a scholar and jurist. He graduated first in his class from the Mekteb-i Kuzât, the School for Judges, in 1895 and received a gold education medal.
After graduation, he served as a deputy judge in several districts, including Bolu, Suşehri, Erbaa, Karakilise and Niksar. These appointments placed him within the judicial network that connected the late Ottoman provinces to the central legal administration.
Alongside his judicial career, Mahmud Cemaleddin Efendi was also known as a mudarris and faqih. This combination of madrasa scholarship and judicial service was characteristic of late Ottoman figures who stood at the intersection of classical legal learning and modern court practice.
He died in 1334 in the Hijri calendar, corresponding to 1915, and was buried in the Fatih Mosque Cemetery.
