Highlights

  • Mustafa Hâkî Efendi was born in Tokat in 1855 as the son of Abdullah Efendi, one of the notables and scholars of Tokat. He belonged to a sayyid family, completed his memorization of the Qur’an at an early age, and continued his religious studies in the Tokat region. In the Hâlidî-Naqshbandi path, he received ijazah from Mustafa Rûmî Efendi and was also known by the nickname “Melek Hâfız.”

  • While serving at Ali Paşa Mosque in Tokat, he was elected Tokat deputy to the Ottoman Chamber of Deputies in the 1908 elections. His arrival in Istanbul marked the beginning of a period in which he established wider connections both through political representation and Sufi circles.

  • Mustafa Hâkî Efendi was later appointed postnişin of the İsmetullah Efendi Lodge in Fatih-Çarşamba. After this appointment, made by decision of the Meclis-i Meşâyıh in 1914, he continued his activities of spiritual guidance in this lodge and often performed his prayers at Fatih Mosque.

  • Among the figures he trained in the Hâlidî path, Sivaslı Mustafa Tâkî Efendi and İhramcızâde İsmail Hakkı Toprak Efendi stand out in particular. This silsila later held an important place in the continuation of the Hâlidî-Naqshbandi line of spiritual learning that became influential around Sivas and Darende.

  • Tokadî es-Seyyid el-Hac Mustafa Hâkî Efendi died in Istanbul on 23 Rabi‘ al-akhir 1338, corresponding to 15 January 1920, and was buried in the Fatih Mosque Cemetery. His grave was repaired on 27 December 2004, and his gravestone was written by Calligrapher Mahmud Şahin.
