Nuri Efendi

Nuri Efendi, whose date of birth has not been identified, was one of the officials in the service of Gevherhan Sultan, daughter of Mehmed the Conqueror. This record of service connected with the early Ottoman dynastic circle places him among the figures seen around the palace and household of the Conqueror’s age.

Gevherhan Sultan was the daughter of Mehmed the Conqueror and Gülbahar Hatun. She was married to Uğurlu Mehmed Bey, son of the Akkoyunlu ruler Uzun Hasan; from this marriage was born Göde Ahmed Bey, who would later ascend the Akkoyunlu throne. After Uğurlu Mehmed was killed, Gevherhan Sultan and her son were brought to Istanbul.

With its Hijri date of 884, his gravestone is one of the earliest dated records seen in the Fatih Mosque Cemetery. However, since the script character of the present stone does not display fifteenth-century features, it was probably renewed in a later period.

Nuri Efendi died in 884 in the Hijri calendar, corresponding to 1479, and was buried in the Fatih Mosque Cemetery.
