Osman Safiyüddin Efendi

Ahıskalı Gürcü Hacı Osman Safiyüddin Efendi, whose date of birth has not been identified, was one of the dersiâms who taught at Fatih Mosque. The nisba Ahıskalı places him within the Georgian learned circles of Caucasian origin.

Osman Safiyüddin Efendi was among the muhataps of the Huzur Dersleri. These were Qur’anic commentary lessons held before the sultan during Ramadan; muhatap was the title used for the scholars who took part in the scholarly discussion of the lesson presented by the mukarrir. In the 1898 list of the Huzur Dersleri, the name of Ahıskalı Osman Safiyüddin Efendi appears among the muhataps.

Ahıskalı Gürcü Hacı Osman Safiyüddin Efendi died on 5 Sha‘ban 1322, corresponding to 15 October 1904, and was buried in the Fatih Mosque Cemetery.
