Highlights

  • Sa‘deddin Paşa was born in Istanbul in 1851 as the son of Mehmed Şükrü Efendi, a defterdar. He studied at Bursa Military İdâdî, the Military Academy and the Staff College, and from the 1870s onward served in the Ottoman army as a staff officer.

  • He held military duties during the Herzegovina Revolt and the Russo-Ottoman War of 1877-1878, and later worked in various departments of the Ministry of War. He rose to mirliva in 1884, Ferik (major general) in 1891, First Ferik (lieutenant general) in 1901 and Müşir (marshal) in 1902.

  • Sa‘deddin Paşa’s final official post was Minister of General Military Expenditures. This office was a high post connected with the general expenditures of the Ottoman army, military finance and the related accounting order.

  • Sa‘deddin Paşa died in 1336 in the Hijri calendar, corresponding to 1917, and was buried in the Fatih Mosque Cemetery. The grave of his son Mehmed Lütfullah Bey is also located near his father’s grave in the Fatih Mosque Cemetery.
