  • Sultan Abdürrahman b. Hişâm of Morocco was a ruler of the Alawite/Filali dynasty who reigned in Morocco between 1822 and 1859. During his reign, Morocco faced the French occupation of Algeria and political pressure from European powers.

  • In this political climate, Şerif Ahmed Efendi took refuge in the Ottoman caliphate and was accepted as “Misafir-i hâss-ı Hazret-i Şehriyârî,” that is, a special guest of the reigning sultan, Sultan Abdülhamid II.

  • Şerif Ahmed Efendi died in Istanbul on 1 Safar 1306 (7 October 1888) and was buried in the Fatih Mosque Cemetery.

Epitaph

He is the Eternal. These are the radiant graves of Şerif Ahmed Efendi, one of the seyyids, who was among the sons of Sultan Abdurrahman, son of Sultan Hisham al-Alawi al-Husayni of the Moroccan sultans and the pure line of the Prophet; he sought refuge at the caliphal court and departed to Paradise while a special guest of the sultan. May Allah sanctify his secret. A Fatiha for his soul and for the sake of Allah. 7 October 1888.
