  • Şeyh Cevad Efendi, whose date of birth is unknown, is described in his inscription as belonging to the “Sâdât-ı Berzenciyye.” The Berzencîs are one of the sayyid families descended from Husayn, known in Iraq and the Kurdish regions.

  • The Berzencî family was especially known for its religious and social influence around Süleymaniye, Mosul and Kirkuk. In the late Ottoman period, members of the family were also influential within the region’s networks of Sufi orders, tribes and local politics.

  • Şeyh Cevad Efendi’s daughter Kamile Şerife Hanım, who like him is buried in the Fatih Mosque Cemetery, married Yusuf Şetvan Bey of Benghazi, known for activities connected with Teşkilât-ı Mahsusa during the Tripolitanian War and the First World War.

  • Şeyh Cevad Efendi died in 1299 (1881) and was buried in the Fatih Mosque Cemetery.
