During the Second Constitutional Era, the madrasa was assigned to students with the aim of teaching positive sciences alongside religious sciences.
Following the Law on the Unification of Education (Tevhid-i Tedrisat) dated 3 March 1924, the madrasa was closed; the building was temporarily used to accommodate fire victims.
In 1924, the Çandarlı Kara Halil Sample School moved into the building; the interior walls between the small rooms of the madrasa were removed, and the spaces were adapted to a classroom layout.
The madrasa structure was later completely demolished, and a single-story masonry school building was constructed in its place.
The institution was named “Fethiye Primary School” in 1948–1949 and was converted into “Fethiye Imam Hatip Secondary School” in 2012.
Prominent Features:
The building/institution has historically been known by the names “Çandarlı Kara Halil Numune School,” “6th Primary School,” “16th Primary School,” “Fethiye Primary School,” and “Fethiye Primary Education School.”
The school building is a single-story masonry structure located opposite Fethiye Mosque, on the parcel where Fethiye Madrasa was situated.
Fethiye Madrasa was constructed in the late 16th century by Koca Sinan Pasha. The madrasa, built by Koca Sinan Pasha on the west side of Fethiye Mosque’s courtyard, with a U-shaped plan surrounding the courtyard, is among the examples of mosques with madrasa courtyards.
At the end of the 19th century, the primary school built above the madrasa was designed by architect Kemaleddin Bey.
