About the Person:
  • Gazanfer Ağa is a person who held important positions in the Ottoman palace organization. He served as Has Odabaşı and Kapı Ağası during the reign of Sultan Mehmed III.
  • These duties were responsible for discipline and education within the palace and were among the closest aghas to the sultan. He died in 1603 and was buried in his tomb in the social complex built in his name.

Prominent Features:

  • The tomb is a part of the Gazanfer Ağa Complex and is a whole consisting of a madrasah, fountain and tomb.
  • The facade of the building, which has a dodecagonal plan and is covered with a drumless dome, is covered with cut stone.
  • In the lower row there are rectangular windows with marble pediments and iron bars; in the upper row there are pointed arched windows with interior and exterior panels.
  • Instead of the windows in the lower row, there are six cabinet niches on the north and west facades of the tomb.
  • The hand-drawn rumi decorations on the upper windows attract attention.
  • There are three coffins inside: those of Gazanfer Ağa and two women whose identities are unknown.
  • The tomb is closed to visitors, but it may be reopened with a small restoration.
  • There are several more graves in the cemetery around the tomb, the oldest of which dates back to 1616.
