About the Person:
  • Gazi Osman Paşa was an important soldier who was successful on many fronts in the Ottoman army. After graduating from the Military Academy as a Lieutenant, he served in various positions and served as a commander in regions such as Yemen, Crete, Thessaly, Monastir and Nis.
  • He defended Plevna heroically for five months during the 1876 Ottoman-Russian War, and although he was wounded and captured, he was respected by the Russian Tsar. On his return to Istanbul, Sultan Abdulhamid II gave him the title of “Gazi”. He served as the Mabeyn Counselor, died in 1900 and was buried in the Fatih Mosque graveyard according to his will.

Prominent Features:

  • It has a Neo-Classical style and a square plan.
  • It is covered with a squinched dome.
  • The entrance facade is provided with an arch carried by two columns with muqarnas capitals.
  • There is a window on each of the other three facades; the door has a bow arch.
  • In the interior, there is only a single coffin surrounded by a wooden grid.
  • Acanthus leaves, flowers, palmettes and vase motifs on the grid attract attention.
  • The tomb is well-maintained but is generally closed to visitors due to lack of staff.
  • The “Gazi Osman Pasha Commemoration Ceremony” is held every year on April 5th.
