Hatice Hanım and Ali Hamza Bey

Hatice Hanım, whose dates of birth and death have not been identified, was the wife of Sukyazzâde Hâfız Mustafa Efendi, one of the notables of Rize.

Ali Hamza Bey, who is buried in the same grave with Hatice Hanım, was a staff captain who took part in the defence of Ioannina and was martyred during the First World War. Although the present record does not state the exact degree of kinship between them, their being mentioned together in the same grave places Ali Hamza Bey within the family circle of Sukyazzâde Hâfız Mustafa Efendi.

Hatice Hanım died in Istanbul and was buried in the Fatih Mosque Cemetery; her dates of birth and death are not known.

Ali Hamza Bey, whose date of birth has not been identified, was an officer in the Ottoman army who rose to the rank of staff captain. The staff class referred to officers trained at the War Academy and employed in the command, administration and planning levels of the army.

Ali Hamza Bey was among the officers who took part in the defence of Ioannina during the Balkan War. The defence of Ioannina is remembered for the months-long resistance of the Ottoman forces under Esat Paşa and ended with the fall of the city in 1913. It was one of the most remarkable defensive phases of the Balkan War.

Ali Hamza Bey, who was martyred during this blessed resistance, is buried in the Fatih Mosque Cemetery in the same family grave as Hatice Hanım, the wife of Sukyazzâde Hâfız Mustafa Efendi of Rize.
