The German Kroecker family operated the building as a hotel under the name Grand Hotel Kroecker between 1890 and 1918.
The building, which was confiscated by the German General Staff during the First World War, was also used by the British in 1918 as an intelligence center and prison.
The structure, vacated by the British in 1922, was used for a time by the YMCA (Young Men’s Christian Association).
In 1947, it was rented by the Ministry of National Education and functioned as the Boys’ Intermediate Tailoring School.
The building, expropriated in 1974, was restored by the Istanbul Chamber of Commerce in 1998.
Today, it continues to operate as the Istanbul Chamber of Commerce Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School.
Prominent Features:
The building, which in time also operated under the name Beyoğlu Tailoring Vocational High School, has a layout consisting of three adjoining structural blocks.
On the other side of the building layout, which was divided into two after the evacuation of the British Occupation Forces in 1922, there is today the Beyoğlu Teachers’ Lounge and Evening Arts School.
Historical records contain information that members of the Kuva-yi Milliye resistance were tortured in the basement of the building during the occupation of Istanbul.
