Changes After Construction:
  • The structure underwent a major repair between 1835 and 1836.
  • The structure suffered serious damage in the 1894 earthquake.
  • In the early 20th century, the structure remained in a ruined condition for a long time.
  • In 1952, the structure was repaired and preserved together with the adjacent mosque.
  • Another repair was carried out in 1979.
  • The 190 books in the library of the structure were transferred to the Süleymaniye Library.
Prominent Features:
  • The structure is also known as Şeyhülislâm Esat Efendi Madrasa and Taş Madrasa.
  • It is located in the courtyard of the İsmail Efendi Mosque, around the intersection of Manyasızade Avenue and İsmailağa Street.
  • The construction inscription above the entrance gate clearly states the Dar al-Hadith function of the structure.
  • The portico and cell arrangement around the courtyard forms a “U” scheme; the madrasa contains ten cells.
  • On the south façade finely cut stone is used, while on the other façades rough-cut stone and alternating brick–cut stone masonry appear in places.
  • Hedgehog cornices on the façades, lead-covered domes without drums on the roof, and rectangular chimneys are distinctive elements of the structure.
  • A graveyard is located to the east of the structure; the tomb of the patron is in this graveyard.
