Changes After Construction

  1. Emperor Monomachos converted the structure into an art house where ironwork was performed in 1054.

  2. Gedik Ahmet Pasha reorganized the structure as a sword production workshop after 1453; the structure was known by the name Kilichane.

  3. During the period of Ahmed I, the structure was used as a textile workshop; Janissary uniforms were sewn here.

  4. During the period of Ahmed III, a large hospital was built within the same structure.

  5. During the period of Selim III, the structure was used as a sword house again.

  6. Mithat Pasha organized the structure as the Islahi Sanayi School on September 4, 1868.

  7. The school name became Regional Art School after 1909.

  8. After the proclamation of the Republic, extensive repairs and new additions were made to the structure; the school name became Sultanahmet Boys Art Institute.

  9. The Technical High School in 1968 and the Anatolian Technical High School in 1990 were incorporated into the school.

  10. With the regulations in 2014, the school continued its education under the name Sultanahmet Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School.

  11. The Ministry of National Education announced on July 5, 2024, that an on-site inspection was conducted as part of the ongoing restoration work at the school.

  • The structure is also known by the names Kilichane, Islahi Sanayi School, Regional Art School, and Sultanahmet Boys Art Institute.

  • The marble fountain basins installed in the pool in the front garden of the school, as well as the marble columns and porticos at the entrance, are elements remaining from the hospital period.
