The first phase of the school began with the conversion of a building purchased in 1868 into a school. This first building was wooden and in a worn condition.
When the first building proved inadequate, the present building was constructed in 1922 and began to be used in 1926.
The building served only as a primary school in 1926. A kindergarten class was added in 1931, and it was converted into a secondary school in the 1960-1961 academic year. The secondary section was closed at the end of the 1982-1983 academic year.
The educational use of the building entered a new phase in 1985 with the transition to coeducation.
With compulsory education being extended to eight years in 1998, the school building was gradually adapted to the eight-year primary education system.
Prominent Features:
The building is also referred to in institutional records as “Private Kocamustafapaşa Anarat Hığutyun Armenian Primary School” and “Private Kocamustafapaşa Anarat Hığutyun Armenian Secondary School.”
It is one of the oldest girls’ schools in Istanbul.
Although the history of the institution goes back to 1868, its present building dated 1922 represents a distinct construction phase extending from the late Ottoman period into the early Republican period.
