Changes After Construction
The structure was rebuilt anew during the time of Patriarch Konstantinos (1830–1834).
The baldachin-style marble bell tower in the courtyard was added later.
Featured Highlights
The church belongs to the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Istanbul.
The structure is also known as Panayia Uranon Church.
The church is located within a courtyard enclosed by high walls; the perception of the interior from the outside is limited.
The structure has a three-aisled basilica plan and is positioned on the east–west axis.
Rough-cut stone and brick were used in the masonry mass; the exterior surfaces displayed a plastered / partially plastered arrangement.
The aisles are separated by square-section wooden supports; the upper covering has a hipped / double-pitched roof arrangement covered with tiles.
The apse is semicircular on the interior; the basilical scheme is readable in the overall mass.
To the north of the narthex, there is a holy spring dedicated to Aya Kiryaki.
The gallery level has an “L”-shaped plan; the bell tower in the courtyard does not display stylistic unity with the church mass.
