Changes After Construction
It was built in 1848 under the patronage of the Austrian Consulate of the period, with the function of a primary and secondary school (İbtidai and Rüşdi).
The school, which remained closed for a period during the First World War, was given by Austria to Italy as war reparations.
It reopened as the Italian School in 1919.
In 2025, it underwent restoration in accordance with the construction technique of the period in which it was built.
Featured Highlights
The educational roots of Private Italian High School date back to the school opened in 1861 through the initiative of Italian diplomats.
Educational activities, which later continued on different campuses under the names “Italian Royal Primary and Secondary School” and “Italian Commercial School,” have continued in its present building since 1919.
In the garden of the building, there is a small structure built by the Italian architect Raimondo D’Aronco, who served as palace architect for 16 years during the reign of Abdülhamid II, and it is used today as a kindergarten.
The historical structure, one of Istanbul’s important Neoclassical stone buildings, consists of 5 floors, each approximately 600 m².
Names such as Ergin Ataman, Leyla Gencer, and Nilüfer Yumlu are among the famous graduates of this school.
