Changes After Construction:
  • The historic building was constructed in 1885 by the decree of Abdülhamid II.
  • The building, which was used as a hospital during the First World War, resumed its educational activities from 1918 onward.
  • It took its present form through a large-scale restoration carried out in the mid-20th century.
Prominent Features:
  • Konstantinos Zappas, who played an important role in the revival of the Olympic Games, also became the namesake of the school.
  • The historical roots of the school go back to the Private Zappeion Greek Girls’ High School founded in 1875.
  • The building, shown among the examples of late 19th-century Neoclassical architecture, is situated adjacent to the complex of Aya Triada Greek Orthodox Church.
  • The dimensions of the building, which is 40 metres long and 25 metres wide, were determined by the decree of Abdülhamid II.
  • Known in history as the “School of the Aristocrats” because of the extremely high school fees, Zappeion High School is today referred to as Private Zappeion Greek Primary School, Secondary School, and High School.
