About the Person:
- Tarsusizade Mehmed Nuri Efendi, born on 24 November 1859 in Üsküdar, Istanbul, was the son of Hacı Osman Kâmil Efendi, who held the rank of Rumeli kazasker, and Şerife Hatice Hanım. He began his education in 1868 in the Şeyh Ebülvefâ neighborhood, then continued his studies with his father and prominent scholars of the time.
- In 1877, he entered state service as a müderris. Between 1883 and 1891, he held various bureaucratic positions in institutions such as the kazaskerlik and Evkāf-ı Hümâyun. He was appointed Edirne qadi in 1903 and undersecretary of Evkāf-ı Hümâyun in 1905. In 1912, he became qadi of Egypt and served in Cairo until 1915.
- In 1920, he received the title of Anadolu kazasker and participated in the Second Şûrâ-yı Saltanat. On 27 September 1920, he was appointed şeyhülislâm in the Damad Ferid Paşa government. He served until the abolition of the sultanate in 1922. Though seemingly opposed to the National Struggle, it is claimed he held favorable views towards Ankara.
- Because of this, he was not included in the list of 150 exiles. During the Republic, his pension request was denied and applications on behalf of his daughter were also unsuccessful. He spent his final years in solitude at his yalı in Üsküdar and passed away on 30 July 1927.
