Changes After Construction

  1. In the 19th century, a firepool and a timing room were added to the building.

  2. During the Republican period, extensive repairs were carried out in 1940 and 1976.

  3. Recently, the soup kitchen section was repaired in 1970 and the building was restored again in the 2000s.

Featured Highlights

  • The building is known as the Yeni Valide Mosque. The central domed prayer hall is built on an octagonal support structure; the outer mass shows a vertical gradual development.

  • The elegant bronze grids in the Sultan's Lodge, Kütahya tiles, detailed stonework around the mihrab and the openwork bronze grids in the courtyard windows are noteworthy.

  • The complex stands out with its original decorative details from the Tulip Period; it offers rich examples of stonework and tile decorations.

  • In the outer mass, there are birdhouses that reflect the Ottomans' love for the animals and are among the first examples of their kind.

  • The fountain has a polygonal plan and is covered with elegant bronze networks; it is especially adorned with Tulip Period decorative motifs.
